Not so long ago, scorelines like 8–1, 7–2, 7–6, or 9–6 were practically a usual thing in this rivalry. A recent example is last year’s game in Magnitogorsk, which saw a combined total of 15 goals scored. Trailing by a wide margin, Neftekhimik launched a desperate comeback attempt but fell just short of saving the game.
The history of matchups between these clubs is rich and dramatic. Neftekhimik and Metallurg have faced off three times in the RHL and Superleague playoffs – and on each occasion, Neftekhimik fell just one step short of advancing. However, in the KHL era, our team have not yet crossed sticks with Metallurg Mg in the battle for the Gagarin Cup; that chapter of the rivalry remains unwritten.
